The End
of an Era
We Bid Farewell to a Good
Friend
April 23,1998 - December 9, 2009
12/9/09
Rio-Pirata Casino's Faro (AKA Trudy) was our very first goat.
She taught us a lot about goats and was such a great teacher
that we credit her with putting us on the road to becoming a
commercial goat cheese dairy. During her many years here
she gave us lots of wonderful offspring and lived to see her
granddaughter, Cory,
become a Top Ten Breed Leader. Trudy will be missed
tremendously.

Summer 2009:
Trudy is still loving her accommodations and really
likes the room service. She loves the fresh sunflower leaves and
tomatoes that we bring her from the garden. It gets harder and
harder for her to move around since she has one bum leg, but she manages
to use the push broom head that is mounted on the fencing to scratch
herself and she likes to lay in the soft mound of sand that David
keeps replacing as it blows away in our wind storms.
July
2008 update:
Last
fall Trudy decided that she needed her own place to live. It was
becoming hard for her to compete at the manger for food and to move
around in the big space of the doe barn. We got right to work and
made her a special pen and shelter right by the big propane tank - her
second favorite place. Her most favorite spot has always been next
to the John Deere tractor's exhaust pipe. So much for appreciating
our clean country air!
July 2007 update:
Trudy is finally accepting that her bum leg won’t let her do the things
she did in her younger days. She has learned to let the other goats go
out on long browses without her. She will stay in the shade of a tree and
snooze, or browse a bit closer to home, sometimes she gets babysitting
duty and cares for the kids while the milkers head out into the valley.
She still climbs the stairs up to the milking parlor and comes in for some
grain and cookies. We ordered a custom made brace for Trudy last year,
but had to send it back for some adjustments. The adjustments, which were
supposed to take one day, ended up taking almost a month. By then Trudy
had lost too much mobility in her knee for the brace to work. But she is
still enjoying her retirement and we love going out to pay extra attention
to her. Trudy, our very first goat, has a special place in our hearts…and
in true goat fashion, she takes full advantage of that. Excuse me, I need
to bring her some more animal crackers now, and perhaps some raisins…
July 2006 update:
Trudy is a wonderful goat. In fact, we blame
her for getting us into the dairy business. We tell her that if she’d only
been a mean, cantankerous thing, we’d have stayed away from getting more
goats. But she showed us how fun and interesting goats are. After a hard
day’s work, we’ll go sit outside with the goats and relax. Trudy will come
over to rub her head on us and we’ll blame her for how tired we are. She
seems willing to accept that responsibility, as long as she can get
scratched and loved on.
Trudy gave us triplet daughters this spring
and then retired. She hurt her leg many years ago and it is getting hard
for her to move around while carrying kids and/or a full udder. She is
still first to come into the milking parlor, just for a little grain and a
handful of animal crackers, and her name is still at the top of the milking
line-up board. Hopefully, it will be there for a long time to come.
2005 update:
Trudy is leading our herd through the official DHIR milk
testing that has been started at BMR. Trudy will be getting her
Star for the amazing quality of her milk. She's helping us make
wonderfully rich cheeses with her amazing butterfat! Way to go, Trudy!
More background on Trudy:
Trudy is our benevolent herd queen.
She is a very good girl - our very 1st goat on the ranch. She arrived
here at BMR with her daughter, Angel, in February 2001.
She started out as pretty much a "barn potato" when we got her but now
takes her herd on big browsing walks all over our 280 acres, and then some.
One year we found her leading the group way up the rocky mesa that backs
the ranch, just 2 days before she kidded with twins. What a trooper!
Trudy has a "thing" for our John Deere tractor, we think it's love and
wouldn't be surprised if she gave us little green and yellow kids some year. |

Summer 2009 update:
Sweet, shy Cinnamon just loves being on her ranch.
She browses out in the valley or up the mesa with her buddies, lays
under the juniper trees to chew her cud, and occasionally wanders over
to the buck pen to flirt with the boys. She does a great job in
the milking parlor and loves getting attention from her people.
July 2008 update:
Cinnamon grows more beautiful each year.
She is sweet and productive, and we just love having her around.
July 2007 update:
Cinnamon is a gorgeous girl – she has a
friendly face, great body capacity, excellent dairy character, and she is
a very strong milker. She still has a hint of shyness about her, yet a
determination that allows her to push into the milking parlor when it’s
her turn to be milked, or to push up close to her person if she needs
extra loving. Cinnamon kidded with triplets this spring, gave lots of colostrum, and
is now milking like the pro that she is.
July 2006 update:
Can a new
milker be any cuter than this girl? We doubt it. Cinnamon is a bit
shy and easily confused. But she’s learned to come into the parlor and wait
for the other more boisterous goats to push by her. Then she waits for
Kathryn to show her where her stand is and she dutifully jumps up onto it.
No, we don’t move the furniture to confuse her, she just likes to be sure.
Once on the stand, she munches her grain and gives lots of wonderfully rich
milk. She really likes the animal crackers that she gets on her way out the
door – which she finds with no problem, all by herself.

July 2009:
Snip hasn't let the wonderful LA
score go to her head. She still
shows up for work and loves her job. Her daughter from last year,
Lillith, is performing beautifully as well. We sure hope Snip
gives us another one just like her.
July 2008 update:
What a surprise! Snip is milking
well and even appraised as Excellent. OK, so maybe that is not a
surprise. But when did that plush doll of a kid grow up to be such
a beauty?
July 2007 update:
This girl can make milk! She loves
her turn in the milking parlor and gives David lots of milk for his
cheesemaking. She is a fun girl to milk and when we have people
here learning how to milk, Snip is one of the teachers. She is
patient and has wonderful teats that are easy to use. She milks
out so easily and quickly that once we are done milking her we end up
waiting on her to finish her ration of grain. She likes going on
browsing walks and hanging out with her people.
July 2006 update:
Snip still
enjoys all the games and activities that she loved to do last year and stays
pretty busy. She does, however, find the time to enjoy her newest
activity – milking. We keep having to remind ourselves that Snip is a
first freshener. She acts like an old pro in the milking parlor, and
milks like one too.
More background on Lavender (2005)
Lavender is a big, beautiful, sturdy girl. She’s very friendly and loves
to cuddle. If we trip over something while outside – chances are that it’s
Lavender. She doesn’t want to miss an opportunity to get attention!
Lavender, AKA Snip, is really enjoying being a kid at Black Mesa Ranch.
Playing King of the Hill on the big dirt pile or logs, rubbing on the fence,
browsing out on the range, getting lovin’ from her people. Snip never seems
to run out of things to do.

What an incredible goat!
Flash won her star in style by becoming a
National Top 10 Nubian in all three test categories
in 2002, achieving national "Breed Leader Status".
She was the 4th best milk producing Nubian in the entire country while also coming
in with the 9th best protein levels and 6th best butterfat content of all
the Nubian goats tested that year.
She is recorded as producing 3670# of milk
in 304 days as a 2-year old - averaging more than 1 1/2 gallons per day
over
10 months!
Flash is one of the daughters of Jacob's
Pride Yonina, a 7* milker - one of the 10 best milkers in the nation in
1999.
One of her 2002 sons has now qualified for the ADGA Sire Development
Program.
Despite her awards and fancy pedigree, Flasher is no prima-donna (well,
she can be a bit fussy on the milk stand) and took right away to our
free-range management methods - learning quickly that there is much more to
life than just confinement living.
